Paul Klee

Paul Klee certainly deserves his own Blogspot area, and for those who have not seen much of his work before, i hope that this blog will help you to understand more about his life and to look deeper into his career which was varied, innovative and consistently of a very high quality. This Swiss artist, predominantly a painter, has a huge back catalogue of paintings, prints and drawings to enjoy from a long and distinguished career and those included here are just a small selection of his overall achievements. This article focuses in mainly on Paul Klee paintings but not completely exclusively.

Paintings such as Castle and Sun have become well known in the contemporary arts scene but this artist was someone who liked to experiment with different ideas and mediums and went far beyond traditional oil painting technqiues as used here. There was a distinctly abstract look to many of his works and that came at a time when abstract art was relatively new and still aiming to build up support with in the mainstream art public, which it did eventually achieve.

It is incredible to see the full extent of Paul Klee's output across his career, with around 10,000 works attributed to him from a period of around 40 years. Besides his paintings, there were also many drawings and etchings too, with some of his best known works including Castle and Sun, Twittering Machine, Fish Magic and Viaducts Break Ranks.

It is generally accepted that his highly innovative artistic approach had taken in influences from a variety of art movements including expressionism, cubism and surrealism which were growing in strength at around the same time that this artist was to make his mark. Paul Klee himself has loosely been classified with in the art movements of Expressionism, Bauhaus and Surrealism though in truth it is relatively difficult to place him rididly into any specific movement because of the changes which took place in his career as he progressed in different directions across the 40 years.

Paul Klee was an artist who became heavily involved in the theory surrounding art and was particularly interested in the existing ideas surrounding colour and would regularly challenge these as he tried to push art into new directions. This theorism was developed in conjunction with Wassily Kandinsky who also was interested in publishing articles on their ideas for how things could change. The Bauhaus movement is now considered a highly important influence on the development of several contemporary art movements of around this time.

Paul Klee has become highly regarded with in Europe and particularly in and around his native Switzerland, and because of the huge amounts of art which he produced it can be relatively easy to see some of his work with your own eyes, be it his original paintings, drawings or etchings. Indeed, this success has led to Paul Klee becoming one of the most reproduced artists of all currently, with thousands options to buy Paul Klee prints or paintings to add to their own homes.
